I think I need some help here. A couple of weeks ago I posted a
failure description here (under the subject "chestnut43 ethernet
dead?") about a malfunctioning ethernet controller. Since there were
no suggestions what to check besides what I listed there, I requested
an RMA and was granted one. I got the replacement a couple of days
ago. Plugged it on the Overo Earth, and was happily pinging my router
right away. Then I left it running, and the next day this one, too,
was dead. Or maybe it isn't, I just don't know what to think.
The LEDs appear to behave normally, but there is not a single bit gong
in or out. Tried a different cable. A different kernel. Booting from
NAND on the microSD card. Fiddling with smc911x compiled in or in a
module. DHCP or static IP. And none of this was necessary when I got
the module. It just worked as one would expect it to.
I know errors happen, and have nothing against being the one in maybe
10000 with a bad solder joint, as Kerry Thomas has said earlier on
this list. But two consecutive failures of the same kind on the same
hw? Makes me wonder. I assume there are quite a few people on this
list using the Chestnut43's ethernet. (I am still trying to get my
project started, so I can't really tell if the other bits are OK or
not, but I assume they are). Has anyone seen anything like this?
My PCB is PCB30005-R2467, http://pubs.gumstix.com/ has PCB30005-2496
only, but I couldn't find the list of changes anywhere. I will try to
inspect the board to find shorts (there were a couple of mails
recently suggesting shorts at various places), but then again how come
it worked at first?
I am really at a loss here, if anyone has any ideas, please throw them at me.
