I'm getting erratic behaviour when attempting to attach to my Gumstix(basix 400xm-bt with root_fs_arm.r1161)/Robostix stack via Bluetooth. All I want to do is use a Bluetooth Serial Port as my console. I have the pullup resistor installed across pins 3 and 4 on the Gumstix port on the Robostix and the red LED always flashes correctly. If I don't have any sensors attached to the Robostix I can usually get the serial port to show up to my Windows box after rebooting the Gumstix a time or two. If I have a sensor (VEX light sensor) attached to an ADC port on the Robostix, I can NEVER get the serial port to be available to Windows. If I boot, get the BTSP working, and then attach the sensor without rebooting, everything works great and I get good data with i2c-io. Does this make any sense? The Bluetooth module is on the Basix motherboard, how do I power it seperately from the Robostix board? Even without the sensor connected I have to reboot the Gumstix multiple times before successfully connecting. Is Bluetooth always this flakey? Not just any voltage regulator, but a switching voltage regulator. Linear voltage regulators will waste just as much as a diode. I was somehow picturing an external bluetooth to serial adapter. I know that wifi draws a huge amount of power (about 500 ma), and since the robostix only has a 500 ma voltage regulator on it, this causes problems. I'm speculating that using bluetooth is also causing large current draws, and combined with your sensor this is overloading things. How are you powering the robostix? What voltage are you feeding into the robostix? The ideal voltage would be 5.5v Anything above this causes the voltage regulators to convert the excess into heat. Currently (no pun intended) the only power is from the 5v brick that came with the Robostix. I'll try powering the sensors externally. Something seems fishy then. There are actually 4 voltage regulators on the robostix, one for the gumstix, one for the analog power on the robostix and one for the digital power on the robostix. Unless your sensor is drawing a huge amount of power, it shouldn't cause a problem. Clair, fyi, I have some flakiness on an xm board. I have to reset the adapter once in a while and the strange thing is even the external bluetooth adapter I put on the xm was a little flaky like that (needed a reset) I didn't have either trouble with a pre-xm board. Both were tested with audiostix2. The only thing I wasn't happy with in the tests was my "5v" adapter was producing over 6v. I'm going to retest everything with a proper 5v. Brad |

OK, I have everything working much better now. I changed the line in /etc/default/bluetooth from: PAND_OPTIONS="--role PANU --search --persist" to PAND_OPTIONS="--role PANU --service PANU --connect 00:16:38:39:ED:4F -Q10" ...where the connect address is for the BT dongle on my Windows PC. I think that what this does is tell the Gumstix explictly who to attach to instead of searching. Now I can get the serial BT working the first time (almost) every time. Unfortunately when I change the connect address to the BT address on my Axim I still can't get it to work. When I try to open the BT serial port in MobiTerm it always fails. Clair How did you figure out this workaround? The issues may also be related to the bluez version. 2.x is no longer supported but gumstix runs a current kernel so there is a widening rift. Updating to bluez 3.x requires dbus so it's not so straightforward. I just looked at what others had done and the gumstix web page on setting up bluetooth networking. Of course this morning it took 4 tries to get the connection, and still no luck with a gumstix => pda connection.
