Hey Are there android binaries I can install on an overo fire/lcd rig? I only see instructions for doing a build that seem to be out of date and won't work. (For one thing, the optional sgx drivers seem to really be required but it's not clear if putting them in external/ is good enough or where one should really put the folder that gets installed by the sgx setup binary) -- Brad Midgley |

Try using our Android 2.2 build. The LCD setup has to be changed from our original one (FLOW) but the rest should work. We also have the OpenGL drivers working. Hi Brad, The SGX drivers aren't required (in fact, a device is sitting on my desk right now running without them) however there are some screen glitches without as if the double-buffering is not done correctly. Rowboat-android recently pulled the sgx drivers into their manifest file directly so they show up in 'external'. The wiki instructions haven't been updated to reflect this change however it should still work as written. Guys, Now I have android running on an overo fire, but without a package manager, file browser, market, working wifi, etc. it is impossible to load apps or do anything non-trivial. Is this as good as it gets or did I have a build problem? I have heard of several unofficial Android markets out there though which don't have these restrictions. At a fundamental level, you are just downloading an apk file and installing it---provided you can get the file from another source (*cough*cough* pulling it off another Android device with marketplace support perhaps?) you can use adb to push the apk over and install it. Please post back with anything you discover as I, and I'm sure others, would be interested to know about the best way of getting applications installed. I really haven't played with android (or smartphones in general) outside of using it on a Gumstix so there is a lot about the ecosystem I don't know. -Ash |
