Morning Matt,
I upgraded to the 1161 version of U-Boot and got access to my CF card with pinit on but only for cards that were a max of 128Meg. I admit that I have a small sample set, but various small cards work, but my Sandisk 256MB card gave me the same "unknown card type" in U-Boot. Something to try I guess.

Older u-boots don't support the CF card at all. Then, when CF support
was added, I discovered that the pinit command would only work once
after a poweron and then it would fail from that point forwards.

This issue has been resolved in the latest uboot, although I don't
know if it's shipping on any gumstix yet.
