I figured it out!  What I was doing was creating the shell script using notepad on a windows machine and then transfering them onto the gumstix.  Finally, when I opened up the file in vi I noticed it had a "^M" at the end of each line.  When I figured out how to use vi, I deleted the "^M" on each line and ran the script.  It worked beautify!  Thank you for your replies.

I'm using sh format, im not sure if that helps.  I am new to shell scripting.  My impression was that you just had to create a txt file with the extension .sh and then run it with the command "sh TextFile.sh"  Am I missing something big?  Do I have to run it another way? ./TextFile does not work for me.  Do I have to enter a shell scripting mode or something?

Is your script in UNIX format ?
i.e. CR and not CR/LF ?

I am trying to insert a pause between commands I send a servo controller (attached to the gumstix console-vx) but whenever I use the sleep command I get the useage as if I were to type "sleep --help"  Any suggestions?

Here is the code I am using named initialize.sh:

$vi initialize
#!/bin/sh
echo -e "#0 P1500 T1000\r" > /dev/ttyS0
sleep 1
echo -e "#12 P1500 T1000\r" > /dev/ttyS0
sleep 1
echo -e "#18 P1500 T1000\r" > /dev/ttyS0
sleep 1
