Solved.

I made a backup, then took a chance and deleted it. I rebooted to make sure everything still works fine and it worked, so now I've got 7.2MB free again.

My /var/lib/ipkg/base claims to be 215 MB big. Is this normal? Can I delete it?

I got my gumstix online for the first time (until now I've had to transfer ipk's using a usb-stick) and so I ran "ipkg update". First it spent some time downloading Packages.gz, and then it inflated it whereupon it failed. I'm left with 440k space, instead of the little over 7M I had earlier and if I try running "ipkg update" again it segfaults.

How do I clean up the files that "ipkg update" downloaded?
