Software wise my code is almost identical to what you have going on.  (I'm reading instead of writing).

I want to verify that out of the box those additional serial ports are enabled.  Could I possibly missing something there?  If the answer is yes, I'll probably need to take a closer look at the hardware sending the data.

Take a look at this example of using one of the serial ports to talk
to a 7 segment display:

It is output only, but will give you a general overview of how to approach this.
