You are probably safe. The LCD is exported over the framebuffer and distrobutions like OE use the same userland tools. I don't know what the setgpio does but it can't be that much as there are standard kernel (sys) interfaces to configure,get and set gpio's. If you are not going to build from sources why not simply use a proper OE based rootfs binary image?
I was a bit tired, setgpio was a typo, i mean devmem2 and other gumstix related tools. It seems to be OK. And why debian ? I had serious problems with OE images, and i'm using debian on my desktop more than 10 years ago, so it's more comfortable for me.
