I appreciate the tip, but I'm afraid that it didn't work in this case.  I've tried deleting tmp and re-running the bitbake 3 times with the same result.  This is the output I'm getting now:

There were a *lot* of upstream changes in the most recent merge.  More
than likely someone missed a required dependency or didn't bump a PR
and this is the source of your issues.

Probably the best thing to do is to delete your OE tmp directory and
restart the build (i.e. do a clean build).

I've done successful clean builds from the latest pull on Ubuntu 9.04
and 10.04 (both 32 and 64 bit), so it is pretty likely that this will
fix your issues.
