Thanks, once I reorganized the directory structure it worked right away.

Here's the image file in case you care to add that in too:

I have a working helloworld over here:
http://svn.hylands.org/linux/oe/user.collection/recipes/helloworld/

You should have a helloworld directory inside a directory called recipies.

That helloworld directory should contain the helloworld_1.0.0.bb file
and a directory called files with hello.c

~/overo-oe/user.collection:
-- recipies
-- -- helloworld
-- -- -- helloworld_1.0.0.bb
-- -- -- files
-- -- -- -- hello.c
