That's a good idea.   You may also want to see what happens when you try to unpack expat-2.0.1.tar.gz manually.

tar -xzf sources/expat-2.0.1.tar.gz

If you can't, maybe you could send the md5sum of your tar file?  Although these are supposed to be checked automatically.

md5sum sources/expat-2.0.1.tar.gz
