P.S. that last link is way too much information, the short of it is this:

mkdir ~/linux-omap-2.6
cd ~/linux-omap-2.6
git init
git remote add sakoman git://www.sakoman.com/git/linux-omap-2.6
git fetch
git checkout -b sakoman-2.6.38 sakoman/omap-2.6.38
make omap2_defconfig
make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=${OVEROTOP}/tmp/sysroots/i686-linux/usr/armv7a/bin/arm-none-linux-gnueabi-

You'll have to double check as to which omapxxx_defconfig should be used

ls ~/linux-omap-2.6/arch/arm/mach-omap2/

There used to be an overo_defconfig, but I don't think that's being used anymore.

For the kernel, I always built mine from the git repo mentioned in .overo-oe/org.openembedded.dev/recipes/linux/.../linux-omap_2.6.36.bb

It's much much much much easier to just build your kernel outside of oe.

it seems I have to apply a patch because
$ echo out > /sys/class/gpio/gpio211/direction
(from http://wiki.gumstix.org/index.php?title=Category:How_to_-_Low_Power#Disable_LEDs)
doesn't work.
When I search for "board-overo.c", the same file turns up in several
places - which one do I patch before rebuilding?
