If I make this change will I need to delete my tmp or will a -c clean linux-omap3 do the job?

If you make this change, you will have to increment the PR = r01 version to r02

That is the recommended way, but it will start to eat up space after a while, since you will r01 and r02 builds on your hard disk.

What I usually do for simple changes is to do a

bitbake -c clean linux-omap3-2.6.30
bitbake -c rebuild linux-omap3-2.6.30

that will take care of everything and give you a clean rebuild.

Keep in mind, if you switch from v2.6.30 to a lower version, v2.6.29, then it will mess up the rootfs image creation process, I think. So in that situation, you would have to delete your entire tmp folder and start afresh

Best regards,
