Thanks for the quick reply, I probably need to get some general embedded design/newbie books before I get banned from the lists :-) As far as checking the status, would I be able to receive HEX data over the GPIO lines? The device I'd like to receive data from has a "Serial Out. TTL-level interface, 2400bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit"

Using lines as ouput can be done several ways:
modprobe proc_gpio
echo "GPIO out set" > /proc/gpio/GPIO99

(replace 99 with the pin number you're tryng to set. Replace set with
clear to make it go low.

For input, you can check the status using:

cat /proc/gpio/GPIO99
