I've never used the max128 on a gumstix but with a motorolla chip. should be the same interface...
can the max128 work on 3.3v ? I havn't really looked

OK - so just to confirm all of the wiring.

Your pullups goto 3.3v

You have SCL, SDA, GND connected between the gpsstix and the max128

You've wired up the rest of the max128 as depicted in page 1 of the
datasheet. This doesn't show the common ground between the uC and the
max128 and also doesn't show the pullup resistors.
