Bingo!  I'm a dumbass: One of the two ports wasn't snapped all the way in.  Sigh, still learning my way around new hardware.

Not a dumbass, common trap with gumstix especially if you don't have them fastened to the motherboard properly.

Can happen even with those white push in connectors gumstix supplies.
Better to get some nylon screws and nuts and spacers and bolt them down so there is no play.

Need it if you are going to put a heatsink on the omap chip (overo earth/water/Tide) or on the wifi chipset on overo air/fire/FE boards.
Depends on ambient conditions and if its going into a box or not.
(Here in summer it hits up to 45 *C and box temp can hit 65*C especially in sunlight)
