Thanks for the suggestions; they are keeping me very busy!! J

I forced the D-link Extreme AP into G only mode and found the same performance.

I tried playing around with the distance between the AP and gumstix, it had little effect.

I snooped around for other devices to make sure they weren't clogging the bandwidth and also tried changing the transmission channel to avoid and kind of RF clash; again no effect.

Lastly and I tried two other APs, the Voyager 1500 and the Belkin pre-n (in g mode), these didn't have any effect on the speed either.

I tried the flood ping option but to be honest I am not entirely sure how to interpret the results.

Is my method to blame? I am just doing an scp or rcp of a 15MByte file across the link and looking at the displayed transmission rate which does seem to tie up with the file size and transmission time calculation?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a "good" full speed g AP which I can buy which will definitely rule out the hardware I am currently testing the link with??

I am still keen as monkeys to get this link working faster J
