I kind of came to that conclusion myself. Should I go for Ubuntu 10.04 specifically or will one of the newer builds work just as well?

I'm assuming that the Ubuntu/Virtual Box combination will have no problem accessing a USB/Serial Port Adapter? Maybe not essential but it would be useful.

It might be a good idea to add this as info on the wiki too.

I can't help you solve this problem directly. However, I'd recommend
installing Ubuntu 10.04 as a virtual machine in VirtualBox and use
that for development. I think you'll have fewer headaches in the long
run.
