However, I successfully set up an Ad-Hoc network with my laptop.
I set it up, and my laptop connects, but I don't know what my gumstix IP address is. wifi0 says the ip is 10.0.1.3, and wlan0 doesn't have that line, in ifconfig.
Also, is this going to last across reboots?
thanks!

does anybody have experience with using the MA701 in Master Mode? Presumably, somebody has tried:
Q: Can the gumstix become a wifi access point or it is just a device on a wifi network?
A: Yes, the gumstix software provides the necessary software support for AP (access point) mode when using a WiFi card, like the netgear ma701, in cfstix.

but I don't know how to set it up.

thanks!

Nicholas,

Two things to try.

1) Are you setting the essid *after* setting the card to ad-hoc mode?
I've seen the order matter when changing modes.
2) Have you tried explicitly assigning one (or both) of the gumstix to
a specific channel using iwconfig?

I am not trying to set up AdHoc mode, sorry if I was confusing. I was trying to make the Gumstix an Access Point, but AdHoc mode would work I suppose. I would prefer Access Point, however, so I can run monitoring/have multiple hosts attached.

Basically, I want to do this:

or :
Q: Can the gumstix become a wifi access point or it is just a device on a wifi network?

I would be fine setting up Ad-Hoc instead if it is a lot simpler, but I would prefer an encrypted Access Point to allow multiple client connections (since my new laptop hasn't been configured to compile code, my old one is forced to compile + SCP to the gumstix).

Thanks for the tips if I decide to use AdHoc!
