Running the mplayerc 6.4.9 without menubar and clicking on the surface and pointing to the "File >" entry freezes the menu UI, maybe because the recent files are not on the disk anymore I think.

I also get this, regardless of whether recent items are available or not - the first time I use the file menu, I always get a freeze for a couple of seconds; perhaps it's trying to read from all disk drives, including floppy and CDs?

This problem still exists. It's pretty annoying.

I've had the same problem. I've looked in my event viewer and discovered a system error: The device, \Device\CdRomX, has a bad block.
No disk in my cd-rom so I exit Deamon that was running my virtual cd-rom's. Nogo.
After that I've disabled all cd-rom's in my Device manager. This solved the problem.
It is due to some copy-protection on certain cd-rom's. Either disable the virtual cd-rom's or unmount them in your virtual cd-rom player. (Deamon, Nero, etc)
