Argh!  I ran ldconfig, but the .so file is not listed.
 No problem - I just put the path in LD_LIBRARY_PATH. 
At least I thought I had.  Turns out I put in the
wrong path.  Once I fixed that, everything worked.  
Hmmm, imagine that.
