You might try writing to the GHDL mailing list at ghd...@gn.... The GHW format was made specifically for GHDL and GTKWave by Tristan Gingold so you might try to contact him also.

where can I find a description of the other file formats than VCD, supported by GTKwave?

In particular, I would be interested in GHW, but in general I'm looking for a more expressive format than VCD.

Unfortunately I could not find anything on Google and I would avoid reverse-engineering the code.
