I have tried building gtkpod with clang instead of gcc. It built and
ran, but only after I de-nested nested functions (and made them static).
Nested functions are a feature of gcc not found in ANSI C.

Should I apply this patch to git, or is it better to have nested
functions than to support another compiler?

I don't have any argument against your patch, but maybe you could provide some more information. Does GCC even generate different binaries with your patch applied? I would be surprised.
