My iPod shuffle 2° was working fine in ubuntu 11 (natty) automounting, but when I ran gtkpod to add some files, it is completely non-functional. OS will not recognize it, fdisk shows no partition table, and the iPod will not operate stand-alone. (i.e. with headphones)

If I "fix" this by restoring factory settings (which requires iTunes access), what's to prevent it from happening again?
