I understand now what you mean by blinking, but I cannot reproduce it.
You program behaves totally normal on my machine, it never gets to the
state where half the buttons are gone. Could it be that your window
manager is at fault? Could you try a different one and/or google to find
out if there is a known bug for your window manager? I am not aware of
any Gtk+ bugs.
