It shouldn't be any slower. it is difficult getting the balance right though; you don't want it so fast that the words scroll past quicker than they can be read, but on the other hand you don't want it to take ages to respond to commands.
At the moment, the game loops every 3 seconds, but if there is a fight, it adds an extra second to give people chance to read the output. Any thoughts?

I've now reduced the game loop to every 1 second, but with a deliberate slowdown when combat occurs.
