I'm under the impressoin that while we have a set_formats_function, we
don't really use it much.
I wanted to make sure wavparse only does seek/convert on supported
formats through this function; can someone tell me what I should be
doing to achieve that, or if there actually is some current use of the
fomrats function ?
I'm willing to document use in the manual :)

Not really true. Do a grep -r on the plugins source tree, you'll see
that quite some plugins use it. Just not all of them who should. ;).
avidemux/asfdemux are two good examples.
