For a while i've been looking around for a freeware retopo program, and it's awesome to finally see one.
I did start using this to retopologize a game model, but my "Reference mesh" was extremely high density, and it seems gsculpt is slightly less than ideal for such meshes. It didn't run very quickly for starters, and the other problem I found was that after exporting and quitting the program I found that the file i exported didn't exist. I'm not sure why.
The mesh i used was about 3 million tris. the original was maybe 6-8 milion - this wouldn't import and I had to shave it back.
The tools are solid, sure enough, but to be a formiddable retopology tool some research might need to be done to optimise higher density meshes.
The in-window gui works fine, nice and smooth, never seems to screw up, but the actual navigation amongst the tools in the toolbar feels to me like an afterthought. A little re-organisation of the toolbox would make things a lot more smooth.
I'd (perhaps pretentiously) rate myself as a well versed 3d artist, and i've tried a handful of programs pretty extensively. I don't wanna sit here telling you all the stuff I think you should do to increase user friendliness, but geoff if you're reading this, and want some advice on keeping the GUI streamlined and usable, I am absolutely more than willing to give you lengthy writeups and diagrams of ideas. I'm also happy to provide promotional or interface artwork if you need it.
