poor performance w/cdparanoia

I'm running grip with RedHat Linux 7.2 on a 1.33GHz
Athlon machine. I am using the SCSI emulation driver
to access my AOpen DVD drive. Using the builtin ripper,
it takes forever to rip a CD. Switching to cdda2wav
gives much better performance (reports 2.1x) vs. using
cdparanioa (reports 0.3x). I never used to have this
problem. I'm using grip version 2.99.0.

I have the same issue, albeit with a different setup:
* grip 3.0.3 from the Ret Hat binary rpm
* P3-650/256Mb RAM
* no SCSI emulation
Performance using (grip) cdparanoia is shocking. Switching
to cdda2wav gives me ~2.2x on my P3-650/256Mb.
