I am Vaibhav Arora, an undergraduate student of Computer Science in National institute of Technology, Trichy, India and am working upon an extension to a existing scheduling algorithm in Grid environment. I am working with grid sim.I have a arcitecture in which I have sites and each sites are machines ,both are grid sim entites. I have a probelm as in I have a entity which doing some work in a loop but there may be some request coming from some other entity while it executin the loop. Then I want the task to care of event. How can we take care of this in grid sim. Analogical condition is that a person is doing some work and there is knock on the door and he then services this event. I cant wait for the event in a loop as it may or may not happen. How to do this in gridsim?? I will be thankful for any replies. |

Hi Komagal, GridSim is a discrete-event simulator in which the capacity of CPUs are expressed in Millions of Instructions per Second (MIPS); the length of a gridlet (i.e. job) is defined in Millions of Instructions (MIs). Therefore, you should model your job as a gridlet with a given number of MIs that reflect the executed operations. Please check the examples included with GridSim for more details. Hi Abhinav, I suppose you are trying to provide some level of co-ordination amongst the site schedulers. Various approaches and protocols for enabling such a co-ordination have been proposed in the literature. Please see the following papers for example: Grimme, C., Lepping, J., and Papaspyrou, A. I am an undergraduate student of Computer Science in National institute of Technology, Trichy, India and am working upon an extension to a existing scheduling algorithm in Grid environment. Description of the grid is as follows: Grid consists of number of sites and site consists of machines. Every site has a centralized scheduler which takes care of scheduling jobs on the machines in that site. If a job cannot be scheduled on any machine in a particular site then it is migrated to some other site. My requirement is all the centralized schedulers in the sites should be working in parallel. I do not know how to go about that. I'm expecting help in this direction. Thanking You Abhinav M Kulkarni |

Hi all, I was trying to solve the problem I posted about the Background traffic and I found something wrong in FlowNetEx02:if traffic increases the execution time of the gridlet remains unchanged. Instead without using flow-links(as in NetExample03), both the execution time and the RTT increases. Someone has noticed the same thing or know if I am wrong? Regards, Leonardo Fortuna |

Hi, thank you for your very useful answer to "Router Problem". Now I have a question about using background traffic functionality. To implement my algorithm I calculate the Round Trip Time to each GridResource. When I use background functionality I expect that RTT grows, while this does not happen. Any idea why or where I am wrong? Best regards, Leonardo Fortuna |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 It fails because some singletons are used and AFAIK there is no clean way to reset the variables. I also use an external script to execute the whole thing several times (as some people has advised you). But for instance Alea (a package based on GridSim for testing scheduling algorithms) uses a modified simjava package that implements a method that resets these inner variables. Furthermore, if you are using another GIS (such as DataGIS), you will also need to reset it, and the method setGIS is not enough, you need to "unsetGIS" first. But this method is not implemented, so I coded it in GridSim class: public static boolean unsetGIS() { gis_ = null; return true; } That's all guanzhou lu escribió: > Dear All: > > I am currently using GridSim for a project, but I have encountered a > problem: > could GridSim simulation run several times in a single class or > function, because I want to take the average performance of the simulation? > > As I wanna my program be like: > class gridsim(){ > main(){ > 1st Simulation > 2nd Simulation > ... > } > > Is there any thread or something that I will need to destroy after > calling the simulation? Hi, What I do is the following: 1- Once I've implemented my stuff, I create a .jar file. The tool u use to program (e.g. eclipse, jbuilder,...) will have details on this point. The .jar file can be executed by java -jar file.jar [parameters] 2- Then, create a linux script or a windows batch file containing your experiments. For instance, it could look like this: java -jar mycode.jar para1 para2 para3 java -jar mycode.jar para1 para2 para3 java -jar mycode.jar para1 para2 para3 java -jar mycode.jar para1 para2 para3 Pay attention that each experiment should write results in files with different names, otherwise u would overwrite the results of the previous experiments. 3- Once ur experiments are over, just implement a program that calculates averages, ... whatever statistical measures u need. Then, u can plot them using gnuplot. Dear All: I am currently using GridSim for a project, but I have encountered a problem: could GridSim simulation run several times in a single class or function, because I want to take the average performance of the simulation? As I wanna my program be like: class gridsim(){ main(){ 1st Simulation 2nd Simulation ... } Is there any thread or something that I will need to destroy after calling the simulation? As the 2nd simulation does not work. Does anyone has met the same problem or knows how to do? I would be appreciate if you could help me on this. Best, Guanzhou |

Hi, You can write an script to run the simulation several times, echo the results in a text file and load it in another program (like excel) and do any statistical operations you need. I hope this helps, Azin guanzhou lu wrote: >Dear All: > >I am currently using GridSim for a project, but I have encountered a >problem: >could GridSim simulation run several times in a single class or >function, because I want to take the average performance of the simulation? > >Does anyone has met the same problem or knows how to do? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, Analyzing the code, I've found that my problem with new flow level network is that there is a "pretty" static attribute in GridSimCore, which is initialized to NET_PACKET_LEVEL by default... [...] /** Specifies which type of network to be used. * By default, the simulation uses the gridsim.net package or differentiated * network service. To change this default property, please use the * {@link gridsim.GridSim#initNetworkType(int)} method <b>before</b> the * simulation starts. * @see gridsim.GridSim#initNetworkType(int) * @see gridsim.GridSimTags#NET_PACKET_LEVEL * @see gridsim.GridSimTags#NET_FLOW_LEVEL * @see gridsim.GridSimTags#NET_BUFFER_PACKET_LEVEL */ protected static int NETWORK_TYPE = GridSimTags.NET_PACKET_LEVEL; [...] This implies that every creation of an entity based on GridSimCore (such as users) initializes its Sim_ports in/out with Input/Output types... which are incompatible with flow networking (that use FlowInput/FlowOutput). To solve this...you can see the "note" in the javadoc of GridSimCore that tells us how to change this attribute: [...] use the gridsim.GridSim.initNetworkType(int) method before the simulation starts. [...] But that is not completely true, because calling the method immediately before GridSim.startGridSimulation is useless, since all the entities that are created before starting the simulation would use the default NET_PACKET_LEVEL. So eventually, the solution is using the method immediately after GridSim is initialized (GridSim.init), instead of before starting the simulation. Finally, my question to developers is, why do you use this static attribute instead of taking the type of Link into account to know whether we want old input/output or new flowinput/flowoutput? Moreover, I think that you shouldn't expect that users find this note in GridSimCore class documentation.
