Each version of GridLAB-D has a lot of capabilities. Generally, you want to use the latest available version, but you should consider what is known to work, what is experimental, and what isn't yet validated. A lot of this is documented in the Wikis, and a summary is capabilities is provided at https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/gridlab-d/index.php?title=History.
As to the question of whether to use the nightly build, there are both advantages and disadvantages. Obviously you get the latest and greatest capabilities when you use the nightly build. However, there are three important disadvantages
1) they don't always pass validation tests, so sometimes things don't work when they used to.
2) they don't always work the same way on all platforms… yet.
3) they're not always documented completely or correctly.
These disadvantages are supposed to be addressed by the time a build become a Release Candidate (RC), but those don't come around nearly as often as nightly builds do (which is about once or twice a week).
