gri_merge.1.gz already exists

At the recommendation of my colleagues at New Mexico Tech, I am considering adding GRI to
the distribution of the EPIC atmospheric model, which is downloadable from NASA's Planetary
    Data System (PDS) Atmospheres Node:

I noticed that with gri-2.12.16 (the only version I've looked at so far)
if I do two 'make install' without a 'make distclean' in between, I
get the following minor warnings and errors:

    /usr/bin/install -c -m 644    ./../doc/*      /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/info
    gzip /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/man/man1/gri_merge.1
gzip: /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/man/man1/gri_merge.1.gz already exists; do you wish to overwrite (y or n)? y
    gzip /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/man/man1/gri_unpage.1
gzip: /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/man/man1/gri_unpage.1.gz already exists; do you wish to overwrite (y or n)? y
    cd  /home/dowling/epic/gri/share/info ; gzip -f --best*
gzip: already has .gz suffix -- unchanged
    make[4]: *** [install-data-local] Error 2
    make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/dowling/epic/gri/gri-2.12.16/doc'
    make[3]: *** [install-am] Error 2
    make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/dowling/epic/gri/gri-2.12.16/doc'
    make[2]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/dowling/epic/gri/gri-2.12.16/doc'
    make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/dowling/epic/gri/gri-2.12.16'
    make: *** [install] Error 2

The reason I do multiple 'make install' is because that is the command our users use to
recompile the EPIC model, and it currently also runs 'make install' for the two third-party
components we include, which are netCDF and now GRI.

Hi.  I'm just about to leave for 2 weeks, and can't fix this now.  Someone else might realize that it's an easy thing to fix though...
