In my experience, normal-sized fonts come out best when stroke is set
to 'none' and fill is used to set the font color.  This is because the
stroke is about as big as the fill for normal-sized fonts, and the
stroke distorts the result.  For large fonts, it is fine to set the
stroke to a color or pattern in order to achieve special effects.
