Hi Doug, > You now have a link that will take you to the new person. I also added > an edit button in the Link Editor, so you can revisit each item, and > add more details to them as you write. Nice! I'm reacting a little late, because I spent the last few days thinking about different concepts, and while I'm not completely sure what's the best thing for full support of the E & C process, I think that the idea of linking from (source or citation) notes is very useful already. > Some other ideas: > > 1) Would you like to share this note with your new Person? (or maybe a > checkbox: [x] Share note) That's a very interesting question, because I read the thread that you referred to earlier, and found that the idea of linking back from objects to notes was dismissed when you introduced the linking idea. And when I say YES to the idea above, the shared note becomes a sort of link between the citation and the object it refers to. I tested this by linking the citation note to a new relation myself, and found that I can even use a quickview gramplet to see where the note is coming from. That's really nice. So, yes, if I you create a checkbox that says Share note, I will probably check that, hoping that every new link I create will automatically cause my citation note to be shared with the object linked to, and of-course also that a note will be un-shared when I change or remove that link. > 4) recognize some phrases such "Michael Smith was born on March 5, > 1862 in France", parse, and create objects > 5) customizable short-cuts for such common phrases (easy way to create > multiple objects given a pattern): > > if "X was born on Y in Z" then: > create Person(X), BirthEvent(Y), Place(Z) > > ...dreaming out loud... Right ... :-) Well, yes, the ideas above sound nice, and I can think of a couple of other things too, like automatically splitting the name like PAF does, or use the highlighted string to help find the right object to link to. What I mean here is that when I create a link for a person named Michael Smith, the link editor tries Smith, Michael to find the right person, so that I don't have to scroll through the full alphabet. The same technique can be used to fill in some fields for the newly created person. Now there's one other thing that I like to ask: Would it be possible to create links from highlighted text with the context menu (right mouse button)? I ask, because I often find myself pressing that right after highlighting that text, and then realizing that I have to click a button in the toolbar instead. But maybe a keyboard shortcut will help too. thank you, Enno |
