Rob, great that you are diving under the hood! This is one of the great
powers of Python, GRAMPS's plugin system, and open source: the code is
fairly easy to understand, nicely modular, and available to change.
I would move the version with your changes to your personal
.gramps/plugins subdirectory. You should rename the name of the report,
both the "name" and "translated_name" so that if the other one appears in
the system gramps/plugins folder, you'll be able to tell them apart.
Also, it may be worth a feature request to add the spouse-term to the list
of textual replacements so that you could see your preferred term
