Alex mentioned keeping apples and oranges seperate and I agree with that principle. However people cannot be seperated from their relationships (except for hermits!). I see a great benefit in having a simple navigation from family list to relationship view (or person, tho I'd have to select the person from a drop-down or something. Personnally I'd vote for making relationships track the family list. If this is contentious, then make it a preference or put in a context menu. Currently I can drill down from events, places, etc to people (and from thence to relationships?) But I cannot go anywhere from family list. It is view-only, right? Let's enhance its uses!
