Where did you get your version of pygtk? Did you compile on your own, or did you get it from somewhere? I installed Python-gtk version 2.0.0 from the SuSE distribution. Should I try installing it from source? Theo Carr-Brion |

I would think that things should work with the python-gtk that came with the distribution. However, things in general look pretty bad here, and it looks as if it involves the python-gtk interaction with python. Richard Bos was working on getting GRAMPS working with SuSE 9.0. Maybe he can help us out here. I had a machine running SuSE 8.2, and GRAMPS does run there. However, that machine is on loan to someone else right now, so I won't be able to immediately debug this. One thing to try at the command prompt is: $ python >>> import pygtk >>> pygtk.require('2.0') >>> import gtk >>> import gtk.gdk See if you can successfully do this in python. This could be for a couple of reasons: 1) It may have been built for python 2.2, and you are using python 2.3 2) Corrupt python installation. For some reason, python-gtk wanted _numpy (numerical python libraries), and they were not installed. 3) Incorrectly built python-gtk RPM. Don |

I have chnged gramps.py to do something like this and it gets past the error. Is this likely to help? I now get: ImportError: could not import bonobo.ui Where does this come from? Don, Can you give us any pointers on which distributions of Linux like Gramps the best? I hate to use the "standards" word but new users do need a chance for success at getting programs to run. Thanks, Jim |
