Daniel, This is a very strange traceback. The NameError in string module does not make much sense, so we'll have to try some investigation=20 here. Could you please try the following (don't type ">>>" signs, they denote=20 your python prompt) and then post the whole Python session transcript=20 in your reply: $ python >>> import gconf >>> client =3D gconf.client_get_default() >>> client.add_dir("/apps/gramps",gconf.CLIENT_PRELOAD_NONE) >>> s =3D client.get_string("/desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style") >>> print s >>> import string >>> print string.upper(s) >>> import gtk >>> eval("gtk.TOOLBAR_%s" % string.upper(s)) This is how this looks on my debian unstable system: $ python Python 2.3.3c1 (#2, Dec 6 2003, 16:44:56) [GCC 3.3.3 20031203 (prerelease) (Debian)] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import gconf >>> client =3D gconf.client_get_default() >>> client.add_dir("/apps/gramps",gconf.CLIENT_PRELOAD_NONE) >>> s =3D client.get_string("/desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style") >>> print s icons >>> import string >>> print string.upper(s) ICONS >>> import gtk >>> eval("gtk.TOOLBAR_%s" % string.upper(s)) 0 >>> Please post your sessions _EXACTLY_ as it appears (best is to=20 cut and paste from the terminal :-) Let's see if we can go from there. Alex P.S. If this is what I think it is, try setting your GNOME toolbar style=20 to icons or text, either through Desktop preferences->Menus and toolbars, or by launching gconf-editor and opening desktop->gnome->interface and modifying toolbar_style to the "icons" string, or by typing=20 $ gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style icons as one line. See if that fixes the problem and you can run gramps. It would be nice to have the python session transcript done _BEFORE_ you set your gnome toolbar to icons though. Daniel, Ah, now this makes perfect sense! For some reason (see below for=20 some possibilities explored), your gconf key for the overall Gnome=20 toolbar style was set to "both-horiz" instead of a=20 proper "both_horiz" string. Then the following proper constant, gtk.TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ, was transformed into gtk.TOOLBAR_BOTH-HORIZ which is interpreted as gtk.TOOLBAR_BOTH minus HORIZ. The gtk.TOOLBAR_BOTH exists as a proper constant,=20 while HORIZ does not! We will put a check to gracefully handle broken keys like this. As for why your key had a dash instead of an underscore, I can guess that this is a heritage of previous gnome versions. I remember my toolbar style key being broken during one of=20 the Gnome upgrades (1.4->2.0 or 2.0->2.4, I don't remember=20 now). Now, if you set your Gnome toolbar key back to "text beside icons"=20 using current gnome tools (gconf-editor or a=20 Desktop Preferences->Menus and toolbars), things should work=20 just fine. The current Gnome should set the key to the correct string,=20 and you should not see that problem ever again. Also, just to note here, Gramps allows you to adjust its toolbar style to be either that of your overall Gnome desktop, or any of the four options (icons, text, both, text beside icons). The latter cases will set it to the chosen style, independently of what the Gnome=20 desktop settings are, so you have an infinite freedom here ;-) Thanks for your feedback, Alex On 2003.12.11 11:44, Daniel Stevenson wrote: > Did what you said and this is what comes up. >=20 > Python 2.3.3c1 (#2, Dec 6 2003, 16:44:56) > [GCC 3.3.3 20031203 (prerelease) (Debian)] on linux2 > Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. > >>> import gconf > >>> client =3D gconf.client_get_default() > >>> client.add_dir("/apps/gramps",gconf.CLIENT_PRELOAD_NONE) > >>> s =3D client.get_string("/desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style") > >>> print s > both-horiz > >>> import string > >>> print string.upper(s) > BOTH-HORIZ > >>> import gtk > >>> eval("gtk.TOOLBAR_%s" % string.upper(s)) > Traceback (most recent call last): > File "<stdin>", line 1, in ? > File "<string>", line 0, in ? > NameError: name 'HORIZ' is not defined > >>> >=20 > Then I changed the icons from text beside icons to icons, and gramps > doesn't have a problem coming up. Anne, Slackware has very poor support for GNOME. The problem you are seeing is due to Slackware shipping an incomplete version of GNOME. We have had reports that the problems are solved by installing Dropline GNOME, which is a project to provide a working version of GNOME on Slackware. http://www.dropline.net/gnome/download.php Don On Sun, 2004-12-26 at 11:35 +0000, Anne Postma wrote: > GRAMPS has encountered an internal error. > Please copy the message below and post a bug report > at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gramps or send an > email message to gra...@li... > > GRAMPS : 1.0.8-1 > LANG : en_US > Python : 2.3.4 final > GTK : 2.4.3 > PyGTK : 2.4.1 > OS : Slackware 10.0.0 > > Traceback (most recent call last): > File "/usr/local/share/gramps/gramps.py", line 90, in ? > StartupDialog.StartupDialog(gramps_main.Gramps,args) > File "/usr/local/share/gramps/StartupDialog.py", line 63, in __init__ > d = gnome.ui.Druid() > AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'Druid' > |

Nate, This is a bug in the current RPM, not in GRAMPS. After installing GRAMPS, the RPM should have restarted the GNOME configuration daemon. Fortunately, this is easy to resolve. From a terminal window, execute the following command: $ pkill gconfd You will only need to do this once. It seems that your system has gnome-python incorrectly or incompletely built. You should be able to do this, regardless of gramps: $ python >>> import gnome >>> import gnome.ui >>> d =3D gnome.ui.Druid() without errors. If the above gives you same Traceback then the problem is with gnome-python. I would suggest forwarding this to the Slackware maintainer for gnome-python package. Slackware is notorious for its poor GNOME support. In fact, the Slackware maintain has announced that he is dropping all support for GNOME. Slackware ships incorrectly built packages for gnome-python, which GRAMPS requires. Unfortunately, this situation is beyond our direct control. One known solution is to install Dropline GNOME for Slackware. You can find it at http://www.dropline.net/gnome/ Don On Sun, 2005-04-24 at 14:32 +0000, Alex Roitman wrote: > Orgt, > > On 04/23/2005 01:39:48 PM, Orgt Rinvik wrote: > > GRAMPS has encountered an internal error. > > Please copy the message below and post a bug report > > at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gramps or send an > > email message to gra...@li... > > > > GRAMPS : 1.0.11-1 > > LANG : en_US > > Python : 2.4.0 final > > GTK : 2.6.1 > > PyGTK : 2.6.1 > > OS : Slackware 10.1.0 > > > > Traceback (most recent call last): > > File "/usr/share/gramps/gramps.py", line 90, in ? > > StartupDialog.StartupDialog(gramps_main.Gramps,args) > > File "/usr/share/gramps/StartupDialog.py", line 63, in __init__ > > d = gnome.ui.Druid() > > AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'Druid' > > Thanks for youre report! Thanks for the bug report. This has been fixed in CVS, and will be incorporated into the 2.0 release.
