There is a problem with your autoload and mime types.

Please, go to directory ~/.gramps, and open file keys.ini
In the section [behavior], make sure autoload is off, so it needs to read:

autoload=False

Now, please install 2.2.8 from here: http://packages.debian.org/lenny/gramps
Believe me, it is orders more stable than what is in debian stable.

Can you now start GRAMPS?
