My perfect setup is the latest gramps.  I think the last number is 6.  I used 11.04 ubuntu and together they work perfect.  I am almost afraid to touch anything for fear I will mess it up!  My machine is 6 years old.  A Toshiba Satellite M35x-S311, 1.8 ghz, 1.5 GB and 100 GB hard drive.

I have an older machine that is actually faster but can use less RAM so it is slower, but it can also run 11.04.  Whatever the problems, Gramps is worth the effort.

I do not have much luck with live distros either.  Try installing 11.04 and the very latest Gramps.  Hope it works for you.
