If I had a dollar for every time I've read some advice similar
to that over the months I could buy myself a nice dinner.

Why not add a feature (I don't care where or how) whereby
gramps itself would unzip it?  Perhaps then showing you,
or maybe then writing it to a file for your favorite editor to
look at.  But basically just remove one or two layers of
complexity which the user now has to know/understand.

Perhaps we just need to introduce a .zgramps format, which is the zipped gramps, so user selects or .gramps or .zgramps. I think all people know that the zgramps will be a much smaller file.
