thank you Jerome. Unfortunately Oracle replaces the links you provided
by a documentation index.


I guess that my 'backup' method causes my problems. I always copied the
entire directory of a family tree and added the date to the directory
name to have some versioning.

A few weeks ago my notebook crashed (OpenSuse 11.2 and Gramps 3.2.3-1).
I copied the latest available version of these directories into
~/.gramps/grampsdb on my new notebook (Ubuntu 10.04 and Gramps 3.2.3-1)
and continued.

I future I will use the Export option to create GRAMPS XML files as backups.

Yes, that is best.
Concerning the log files, if they become too large, export to xml, import in a new family tree, and if all is ok, remove the old family tree.
Normally log files should be removed, some developers  have investigated in the past as to why it does not happen, don't remember now if they found a solution.
