Thanks Doug - LinuxMint forum has supplied the answer - it was in the
repository although apt-get install didn't find it; Package Manager
downloaded and installed it.
$ man rcs now produces its manual - understanding that is another

I don't think you need to get too bogged down in the RCS manual! As far
as I'm aware, once installed RCS stays in the background; you're not
aware of it.
You should simply find that when you have a family tree loaded, if you
click on Family Trees (the Manage Family Trees with the gramps icon) to
get the list of trees displayed and then click on your already loaded
family tree, the Archive button will spring into visibility.
Click on that and you can choose some title for the archive (I usually
write something very succinct, because the Extract stage provides more
information). Then OK.
Gramps is busy for a short time; then it returns to the list display and
you'll see that the original loaded tree now has a left-pointing
triangle to its left. Click on that and you see the name of the archived
Click on the archive and the Extract button becomes visible. Click OK to
extract. Gramps is busy for a little while.
The Extracted archive then appears on the list display as
<original name of tree>:<name of archive>.
Hope you find it useful!
