Hi, So an update to see if this helps: when I run the following commands I get this: $> ./gpsbabel -D9 -i garmin -f /dev/ttyS0 -o kml -F test.kml GPSBabel Version: 1.3.1 Tx Data:10 fe 00 02 10 03 : ...(PRDREQ ) [ERROR] GPS_Packet_Read: Timeout. No data received. GARMIN:Can't init /dev/ttyS0 Rx Data: If I physically unplug the device, I get the same fyi: $> ls -l /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw---- 1 root tty 4, 64 Oct 7 14:49 /dev/ttyS0 $> groups tty wheel users $> gcc -v Using built-in specs. Target: i686-pc-linux-gnu Configured with: /var/tmp/portage/gcc-4.1.1/work/gcc-4.1.1/configure --prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.1 --includedir=/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/include --datadir=/usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1 --mandir=/usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/man --infodir=/usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/info --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/include/g++-v4 --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --disable-altivec --enable-nls --without-included-gettext --with-system-zlib --disable-checking --disable-werror --disable-libunwind-exceptions --disable-multilib --disable-libmudflap --disable-libssp --disable-libgcj --enable-languages=c,c++,fortran --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --enable-__cxa_atexit --enable-clocale=gnu Thread model: posix gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1) I have compiled gpspoint on my old machine (gcc 3.4.something) and it works correctly, so I do not believe there is a problem with my device (in garmin mode). I can run gpsd with nmea on my existing machine with /dev/ttyS0 as the input, so I believe that the connection to my machine is running properly, I have access to the port etc. I am quite confused about what I am doing wrong! Any ideas?
