I've seen this before, so there really is some kind of a problem, but so far we've been unable to figure out where. I can't really tell if it's a key variable or not. We asked for the version and we got it and we told the unit we got it. > GPS_Packet_Read: No DLE >=20 > Rx Data:00=20 > Tx Data:10 06 02 ff 00 f9 10 03 : .....Capability 'C'. Type 26624 > Capability '=01'. Type 21605 > Capability 'r'. Type 30821 This is the beginning of our trip involving a handbasket. We got a packet that started with a '0' instead of a Data Link Escape. This is absolutely not supposed to happen according to Garmin's protocol spec. (I've already said, though, that I file that spec under "Fiction" and "Fantasy". :-) We then burst into flames because we take the (now mangled) previous packet an interpret it as something we shouldn't. The questions to be answered here are: A) Is this an intermittent thing or is this consistent for you? B) Do others with a Vista see this problem? B1) Do they have the same firmware? C) Is the USB converter thingy a "real" component of this problem, or is it a red herring? (Can you try on a legacy serial port or a different flavour of USB converter?) D) Is the receiver really sending a zero there? (I have line analyzers to help answer that kind of question.) E) Is the unit possibly just too slow to respond and we're incurring a receive timeout? (I can send you an instrumented version that=20 runs the timeouts up and/or issues a diagnostic when this happens.) If you really are in Australia, I'm guessing that sending me the affected combo is impractical. Are you perhaps near the other England (Clyde) in .au and able to trade pieces and parts with him? I'd really like to get to the bottom of this as it's currently a ghost rattling chains in my attic... RJL |
