Hey all! I am a newbie to this list, and to many of these GPS functions as well. I am working on a project that I have been fairly successful with, but would still like some help with the data I am receiving if possible. I am using a GPS logging device similar to the BugGPS II. Out of the box, my device was logging GPS points every 5 seconds. I am putting this device on a school bus, in an effort to document the route that the bus needs to take, as well as all of the stops that the bus makes. So far, this has worked out fairly well. The device logs the data to a .txt file in NMEA sentence format. And I have been successful in using GPSBabel to convert these files into .kml Google Earth format for viewing. But if possible, I would like to fine-tune this data if I can. >From this point on, forgive me if I misuse some terms.. When I view the .kml file on Google Earth, there are literally hundreds of waypoints on the map. Basically, there a point is created for every 5 second sample that the device logs. While this does show the route that the bus has taken very accurately, it is very difficult to determine places where the bus has stopped. Is there any way to remove the waypoints where the bus is moving (without affecting the nice colored line that shows the route), but still show the waypoints when the bus is stopped?? Ideally, I would like to see a map on Google Earth that shows the route the bus took (using a colored line), while also showing waypoints at all of the places that the bus stopped to take or drop passengers. Additionally, I would like to be able to 'zoom into' each of these stopping points, and see what time the bus stopped and what time it left (or how long it was stopped) at each of these points. I realize that this would also show when the bus stops at stop signs or other places, but this is not an issue in my application. As I said earlier, my device was set to 5 second logging out of the box. I have figured out how to change this time, and have tried different settings. 30 seconds messes up the route line too badly. 15 seconds is better, but still does not clearly show where the bus stops. I do have copies of the .txt and .kml files I can share with anyone that is interested. Thanks in advance for any assistance that anyone can provide! -Ray Matthews - Lena, IL |
