Well, as it turns out, if you choose the right serial port device (not
the one gardump/load is using, for whatever reason), it all works. I
ran gpsbabel w/o a specified port, and then looked in /dev. When I saw
the .lock and .init files attached to a different device, a very dim
bulb began to glow above my head.
I still don't know what the lock and init files are about. It looks
like the garmin-utils binaries cause the .init to be spawned but for
some reason, I no longer see a lock (I think that may be due to the
fact I cleaned off my GPS and the data transfer is now very brief).
It was using ttyd0, but if I use cuad0, things go much better.
This now works for me:
gpsbabel -w -i garmin -f /dev/cuad0 -o kml -F test.kml
Still don't quite understand how to get from the GPS to something I
can use, but at least I can get to the information.
