I am on Tiger and using the 1.2.5 version. Although, after I downloaded it, it seemed to suggest that 1.2.7 had one in the .bin version? It would be nice to try out the 1.2.7 version for the Mac. It would be nice to try out the 1.2.7 version for the Mac. The current GPSBabel proper (well, as of the beta; I don't recall testing it since) seems to build and run just fine on 10.4. I can't speak for the Applescript stuff as I can't run that remotely. We'll have to rely on another user/developer to try it and report success or failure. RJL |

The applescript part of things in MacGPSBabel does not work for me. I never use it though as I have my own automation. 10.4.3 PB g4 Ill look into the applescript and see if I can't figure it out later this week. I built the 1.2.7 from source last night under 10.4.3 and ran it through the ./testo without errors. So that looks pretty good. When I compiled the AppleScript app it compiled without error. But when run, it generates an error. So if someone knows what the error/problem with the AS is, I'll fix it and compile it. I would also be willing to both build and *host* the binary of GPSBabel for Mac OS X, as well as the MacGPSBabel app. My only concern is with the MacGPSBabel app is that it didn't appear to me that it was available under GPL and that Jeremy, who no longer maintains it, holds the copyright. True? Or if anyone just want the 1.2.7 binary, I'd be happy to email it along. Any interest? Karl |

I don't know how many other Mac users are in the same boat as me, but, while I'm a long-term and fairly knowledgeable Mac user, I have done very little with Applescript and I don't know diddly squat about building my own apps or running inside UNIX or anything like that. I would simply like to get my hands on a binary version of MacGPSBabel that is NEWER than 1.2.5. Compatibility with TomTom .ov2 files was added to the PC version way back in April. There hasn't been a new build of the Mac binary version since a month before that. Several months ago, I made a donation to the cause in the hopes that it would help move along a newer Mac build. I am willing to donate more but it's been almost 10 months since the last Mac build and I'm beginning to give up hope that there will EVER be another Mac bulld. I'd like to do some GeoCaching but I need the .ov2 file support to do it all on my Palm Zire 72 with TomTom Navigator 5. Please.. ANYONE... please create a newer version of GPSBabel for the Mac. Thank you! Karl, First of all, THANK YOU. But, unfortunately, I just don't understand the command line structure (Terminal). It is all Greek to me. Without a GUI I am dead in the water. I guess I wasn't clear in my message. I'm looking for an OS X executable 1.2.6 or 1.2.7 version of MacGPSBabel with a GUI. An application, not the "binary". My apologies for not knowing what the heck I was talking about. Mark |

My apologies for not knowing what the heck I was talking about. You should be able to slip the binary behind the existing Applescript GUI and it should Just Work. I don't know the location of that installed GPSBabel binary but following the steps in http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/OSX_debug.html should lead you to the one file that should be replaced. This will however NOT give you the new options or formats. An update to the script would be needed. Plus it does not work in 10.4.x anyway so even if this helped it would not help =/ Robert On Jan 3, 2006, at 11:54 AM, Robert Lipe wrote: > Mark Booth wrote: > >> I guess I wasn't clear in my message. Robert, I have not actually run the older MacGPSBabel replacing the binary with the newer 1.2.7 binary, but since the I didn't seen any difference in the invocation, I assumed it should work. Am I wrong? I did try to quickly compile the MacGPSBabel project from source, and it does compile with no errors. But on first run, it throws an error. So I stopped there to see if anyone knows the problem. Do you know what the problem is, and how to fix it? I'm no InterfaceBuilder maven. Are you saying that the code in MacGPSBabel.applescript that reads the list of options and formats from the underlying binary in the getFormats() function at line 949 is no longer working or are you just guessing? |

No matter what system I run in on that has 10.4 I can't get the gui to work and it states "Applescript Error" and quits before doing anything. I should look into this as I am fairly proficient with applescript, life comes first for me though, my computer second, others computers third. If somebody else wants to have a peek and ask me questions I can send emails back and forth to try to figure it out. When I have added the new binary in the past and tried to access a new format since the last build of the mac version it has not updated the list. This seems odd to me since nowhere in the script does it explicitly spell out the options. I think that this is a hickup possibly where it is remembering it's last options in the prefences and not updating. DISCLAIMER: This is all guessing but it has not worked for me. :) Robert On Jan 3, 2006, at 2:41 PM, Robert Lipe wrote: > On 1/3/06, Robert Nixon <ra...@ma...> wrote: >> This will however NOT give you the new options or formats. Ok, try this... download the WHOLE package and build 1.2.7 from the source and then build MacGPSBabel and run it. This will make MacGPSBabel have the 1.2.7 copy already in it. This just worked for me twice and I am getting it to output files. I'm sorta with Mark. Luckily, the 1.2.5 Mac GUI version works fine for me -- I don't need all the .ozi stuff and a bunch of other formats other people are seeking. My slight disappointment with the on-line "visualizer" and MacSimpleGPS is their use of .loc files -- I prefer the more robust .gpx files instead. Plus, neither one allows for a pure USB hookup to my Garmin 60CS. With Garmin's own firmware release of 4.x for that unit, along with the MacGPSBabel 1.2.5 version, I can connect my 60CS DIRECTLY to the USB port without the hassle of my old -- and slow -- Keyspan USB-to-Serial port adapter. Along with that, I'm using GSAK under Virtual PC on the Mac, just to confuse the issue even more. It would "seem" from the latest thread that the newer source versions (1.2.7?) can be compiled and run for Mac users. Again, like Mark, I don't want to muck about with source code, compiling, etc., etc... If I'm dorking out here and missing something, fine, tell me. But isn't it a simple matter to recompile the code for us Mac users, if it apparently IS as easy as described? True? If we look in the Applescript code, we see -- MacGPSBabel is part of the gpsbabel project and is Copyright (c) 2004 Robert Lipe. So by my reading, it was certainly Jeremy's intent to transfer copyright to me. RJL |

I also got a number of Applesript errors when attempting to use a MacGPSBabel build from the gpsbabel-1.2.7 source, specifically, NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError (1). In older versions of AppleScript Studio, this error failed silently. This error indicates that an applescript refers to objects that are missing. In this case, I think the nib files in the 1.2.7 source were missing some buttons in the UI that are specified in the MacGPSBabel.applescript. I took the nib files from the 1.2.5 build and combined it with the applescript and gpsbabel executable file from the 1.2.7 source to create a new build that seems to have gotten rid of the errors although I have not tested it extensively. It should work on MacOSX10.4 but probably nothing older. If anyone wants to test it, both the MacGPS1.2.7 build and the updated xcode project files can be temporarily found at http://home.comcast.net/~kiirekala/macgpsbabel/index.html -kiirekala On Jan 4, 2006, at 1:00 PM, Robert Nixon wrote: > > On Jan 4, 2006, at 9:49 AM, Stan Glaser wrote: > >> It looks like MacGPSBabel, it sounds like MacGPSBabel, but it >> doesn't act like MacGPSBabel :-( > > That is what I am hearing... =/ > >> If I do a Get Info it shows version 1.2.4 > > but the core is 1.2.7 ... and the 1.2.4 beta is what comes with the > source. > >> -- I tried to run it and don't get any choices in the "Select >> Input File Type" drop-down menus, plus after I connect my GPS, I >> don't see the ability to connect via USB. Can you please provide a patch to the code in CVS that I can apply to make your changes available to anyone that needs to build it? If we can get some affirmation that this version works for the masses I'll put your builds up on our download site if you don't mind.
