If you know what you are doing you can put you GPS so that it presents a file system to your computer. Then you can delete and add in files. But garmin is not always so forthcoming on what the format of those files are, and what they do. But we do know that there is a POI directory in which POI files go. Sorry, I must be too thick to troubleshoot this. I have a lot of experience with GIS software, but am clueless here. FYI, I was looking to read the device contents, delete some of it, and replace it with updated gpx data exported out of GIS software (QGIS). I have done this many times using Basecamp, but as I mentioned, I was looking for a better application. Here's a screenshot of my latest attempt: [image: image.png] But this is far from urgent, and I do not want to take up you guys' time with an effort to educate me. This model is in footnote 2. Use the USB device. It's also unlikely that you intended to both read and write the same device. I think that will actually work, but it's not exactly productive. Did you set the interface format on your garmin device to "GARMIN"? Is your device connected to COM1 or some other com port? What garmin device are you trying to connect to? Is it listed in the gpsbabel documentation (GPSBabel development:Garmin serial/USB protocol (garmin) <https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_garmin.html>)? Hello Bob and Co: I was happy to find gpsbabel this morning as a possible alternative to Garmin's lamentable Basecamp. But I'm getting an error on my first attempt to use it: gpsbabel -w -r -t -i garmin -f COM1 -o garmin -F COM1 [ERROR] GPS_Packet_Read: Timeout. No data received. GARMIN:Can't init COM1 Error running gpsbabel: Process exited unsuccessfully with code 1 Can anyone shed any light on this? The computer and Basecamp are reading the Garmin normally. Thanks in advance. Eric Windows 10 on desktop |

Since it works for tsteven4, My guess is that you have the time slider in Earth Pro clumped closed or otherwise excluding the data. We include a Lookat tag in the KML that should open it , but that's not enough for every combination of settings and previous data. Wisely open the "throat" of the caliper-like time control. I have verified 1.9.0 gives a Map/Satellite selection option on Windows 11. Gpsbabel 1.8.0 is no longer supported. Can you please try 1.9.0, which is available at GPSBabel official download <https://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html>? selection |

It works for me. What version of gpsbabel are you running? What platform? Have you tried the latest release 1.9.0 from GPSBabel official download <https://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html>? satellite map On 4/8/2024 7:11 AM, Johan Wiese wrote: > Good afternoon, > When we also plot on GPSBabel it has always opened our tracks showing > it on Google Earth Pro on the Satellite image. > > The problem - it still opens the tracks that we have walked - but open > it up on Google Maps and we want it on Google satellite image. > > Please see the print screens below. > > Regards > Johan Wiese > South Africa > E-mail : jwi...@gm... > > image.png > > image.png > > > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Gpsbabel-misc mailing listhttp://www.gpsbabel.org > Gps...@li... > To unsubscribe, change list options, or see archives, visit: > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/gpsbabel-misc |

Good afternoon, When we also plot on GPSBabel it has always opened our tracks showing it on Google Earth Pro on the Satellite image. The problem - it still opens the tracks that we have walked - but open it up on Google Maps and we want it on Google satellite image. Please see the print screens below. Hi! It was mentioned somewhere to post GPS logger infos on this list, so the infos can be added to the corresponding gpsbabel html pages ... Three loggers I own and use with Windows 11: - Transystem Inc. (TSI) - photoMate 887 mtk based, Bluetooth https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_mtk.html http://www.transystem.com.tw/www/product.php?b=G&m=pe&cid=4&sid=21&id=58 No longer available for purchase Worked flawlessly until the internal battery got very weak after several years of usage. - Bluemax - GPS-4044 mtk based, Bluetooth https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_mtk.html https://www.amazon.de/Blumax-50131-GPS-4044-Bluetooth-Datalogger/dp/B002B7L9UA/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8 No longer available for purchase Works fine, but after several years of usage the USB connector starts to get connection problems. - Renkforce - GT-730FL-S Sirf 4 based (works with "skytraq"), no Bluetooth, seems to be a rebranded Canmore GT-730FL-S https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_skytraq.html https://www.conrad.de/de/p/renkforce-gt-730fl-s-gps-logger-schwarz-373686.html?refresh=true Still available from Conrad Elektronik here in germany. Seems to sometimes "forget" parts of the recorded track, which makes it basically unusable as you cannot depend on it :-( As I wasn't sure if this issue is caused by the logger itself or maybe gpsbabel, I've tried to read out the logger with the provided "CanWay" Software which showed the exact same problem. If you need any further infos, just let me know. Keep up the good work! Best regards, ULFL |

I'll try that (with gpsbabel 1.9.0). Thanks! If you use the googletakeout format I think the first and last points of a track will get the begin and end times from the timespan. Yes, thank you, that helps! (And thanks to the other people who responded too). And I now have a better understanding of the issue... which was just confusion on my part. The command gpsbabel -i kml -f history-2024-02-13.kml only outputs the named points 34.879970S 55.026819W Rancho Vida Loca/Ranch from 2024-02-13T15:49:13.000Z to 2024-02-13T16:59:58.000Z. You probably would be better off using the googletakeout format to read your data directly from your google takeout location history. This format was first releases in gpsbabel 1.9.0. https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.9.0/fmt_googletakeout.html ubuntu noble will have gpsbabel 1.9.0. Alternatively you can build from source. Hi Juan, To convert all the points into a new file in Gpx format: gpsbabel -i kml -f history-2024-02-13.kml -o gpx -F result.gpx (-o for output format gpx, -F to specify the output filename). This will give you a new file containing not only the seven _named_ points, but also the 200+ unnamed points along the way. The problem with using this kml as a source for geotagging is that all these unnamed points don't contain any information about _when_ you were at each point, they just define the shape of the line. You can see this by editing your kml file, and you'll see the shape defined like this: <coordinates>-55.0285248,-34.87916,0 -55.0285243,-34.8791599, so that's latitude, longitude and elevation for each point, but not the timestamp at which you were at each point. So if you were hoping to do the geotagging automatically based on the timestamp of the photo, you will find that this input data is not ideal. Or if you just want to manually select which points are which, then it should be fine. Hope that helps! activityworkshop On 29/03/2024 00:22, Juan Navarro wrote: > Hi all. I'm new to gpslabel. Hi, Juan. For help with whatever Ubuntu shipped, please contact Ubuntu. We can't be responsible for any changes they introduce. "Quickly" spot-checking the current version (admittedly not on Linux at all) I don't see any surprises. Your input has 7 points: xmllint --pretty 1 ~/Downloads/history-2024-02-13.kml | grep /Point | wc -l 7 We capture 7 points: ./gpsbabel -i kml -f ~/Downloads/history-2024-02-13.kml -o gpx -F - | grep /wpt | wc - l 7 It has nine linestrings: xmllint --pretty 1 ~/Downloads/history-2024-02-13.kml | grep /LineString | wc -l 9 We capture nine tracks; ./gpsbabel -i kml -f ~/Downloads/history-2024-02-13.kml -o gpx -F - | grep '</trk>' | wc -l 9 It's possible there's an issue with the old version that we replaced quite some time back. (Ubuntu also breaks our upgrade check, trapping you on the old version.) but I dont' see a problem. If there's a specific point that isn't being captured, please be much more specific. If I take that file and make GPX out of it and feed that to Earth, which will use its internal GPSBabel to conert back to KML internally, the map view looks pretty much the same as when I pull in that KML directly and the points all match believable locations on the map. We place tracks and waypoints in separate folders. Ours is more attractive, IMO, but I'm surely biased having babysat that for almost 20 years...They do better in preserving folder names (our KML writer doesn't know what folder the reader found anything in) and there's a disagreement in timezone parsing, but that's not the bugreport here... [image: Screen Shot 2024-03-29 at 1.17.23 AM.png] So if you're reporting missing data, please be much more specific about which feature[s] is/are missing. Include the full command issued, confirm that the problem remains in 1.9.0, and either be super specific on the missign data or produce a reduced set of 1-3 points that will make it obvious (but bonus points for identifying it and marking it up) which one is missing. Also, please keep the conversation on the list. Perhaps another Ubuntu user has something more to add and I'll be AFK quite a bit in upcoming days. Sometimes people try to convert things to personal support conversations, but in doing so, reduce the number of helpers available to help solve the reported problem. Hi all. I'm new to gpslabel. I'm trying to use it to convert kml data from google timeline to gpx format so that I can feed gpx data to darktable for geotagging pictures taken with a gps-less camera. If I run gpsbabel -i kml -f history-2024-02-13.kml (see attached kml file), I only get 6 points, but the input file has more than 100 coordinates. How do I get them all? I've tried all I can think of from reading the manual, including '-t' and '-i kml,track=1', to no avail. GPSBabel 1.8.0, Ubuntu 23.10 Thanks in advance. Juan |

Either modify the duplicate to do it or write the output before and after the duplicate filter and diff them. Something approximately like: gpsbabel -i whatever -f blah -o unicsv -F unfiltered -x duplicate -F filtered diff unfiltered filtered More or less. There may be a way to do it with the stack filter, but diff is the tool I'd reach for first, personally. Hi, I want to see the duplicate waypoints which have been removed using the -x duplicate filter, not the ones which remain. How does one do that? TIA. Regards Sutripta |

Probably. It's clearly not a recently tested combination and you may have to debug it... But that going to be true if anything. I can't, however, recommend buying a 1990s era tech device, though. Any modern Garmin is going to give you a better experience. If you absolutely adore that and want to keep that cable,. I'd at least go for the 2000 or 2001 model of that device, the Map 330. OTOH, all. The maps you can get for it are going to be windows only and from about 2005 at best. It is, however a better receiver in the same form factor. Hi, Years ago I had a Magellan 315 and uploaded waypoints to it via some Windows software, don’t remember. This used the Magellan data cable and 9-pin serial port. Anyway, I liked the 315 for a few reasons and may get a “new” one on eBay. I would use the same data cable, but plug the RS-232 end of that into a RS-232-USB adapter. Then plug the USB end of the adapter into my PC (Linux). I now have a standard GPX file of waypoints, which I have used with other more modern devices. So, question is — with the above setup, will gpsbabel command line be able to upload the GPX file waypoints into a Magellan 315 ? thanks for any answers -- Doug McCasland <dmc...@gm...> |

OK Thank you. I had lat and long reversed form that POI factory file. Now I don't have to use garmin poi loader and mess with wine. On 1/7/24 1:52 PM, tsteven4 wrote: > gpsbabel -i unicsv, fields=lat+lon+name+desc -f Wendys_USA_Can.csv -o > garmin_gpi,category="Wendys Rest" -F wendys.gpi |

If you input starts like: -149.93732,61.18088,"Wendy's-Anchorage,AK ","4407 Spenard Rd, Anchorage,AK, (907) 677-8890" -149.86787,61.19424,"Wendy's-Anchorage,AK ","2927 Seward Hwy, Anchorage,AK, (907) 258-4239" -149.86386,61.11842,"Wendy's-Anchorage,AK ","11310 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage,AK, (907) 344-0834" -149.83755,61.21754,"Wendy's-Anchorage,AK ","2323 E 5th Ave, Anchorage,AK, (907) 279-8271" then longitude precedes latitude, so use gpsbabel -i unicsv,fields=lon+lat+name+desc -f wendys.csv ...
