Just a week or two ago, I got mail from someone that wa attempting the
same thing and I think he was using Debian on a VistaC, too. It turned
out that in his case the libusb was old or flawed or something and that
upgrading it to 0.10 was the ticket.
I'd recommend building/using a private copy and not replacing the vendor

That's a write error. We really should quit trying at that point;
everything past here is just a cascade.
Pursue the libusb angle.
